New Work

Here is the work that I have been working on most recently.  I have been working digitally to create pieces from my drawings, collages, scans, and photography.  I really love to play with layers.  We will see where this goes.  All work is copyright Katherine Hess, 2012.  Please do not use without my written consent.

Got into the "Artomatic Takes Flight" show at National Airport!

My piece, the Book of Art Criticism, will be on display in National Airport. There will be 80 artists on display. The show is non-juried, which means that no one picked the artists that would participate - it was done on a first come, first serve basis. When I got to the website to try and enter, they already had closed the option to submit two-dimensional artwork. So I submitted this three-dimensional piece that I made about art criticism. Each of the little trays moves so that different pieces of "art" can be created, and different people can comment on it, and say different things (the woman in the picture is saying, "My dog could do that, and he's blind!") - kind of like a moveable cartoon strip.

The exhibit is in National Airport from March 3, 2011 - June 25, 2011 in the hallway connecting Terminal A.

Hands of Students

I took these pictures last year to give the students a photograph of their hands to work on either a cross-hatched pen and ink drawing in Studio Art, or a cross-hatched dry point etching in Design Concepts. These were the ones I felt were most successful, or most interesting from a photographic point of view (that I don't have to edit to be vertical).

Here are some of my recent photographs that I think I might want to edit further. I have a fairly new camera, and I love how it is taking pictures.

Atticus I

This is a picture of Atticus, my mom's cat. Looking at the photo - the eyes look wonky to me, but Atticus also has wonky eyes. Not this wonky though. I like the fur overall. This is the first cat picture I have done in a series I am trying out, so we will see how it goes. The medium is ink and then watercolor.
